Introduction to Massage

A massage relaxes your muscles, smoothening and relieves pain. Massage is a practice of applying structured or unstructured motion, vibration or pressure with mechanical instruments or hands. Massage can be applied to the parts of the body or to the whole body.

Massage is helpful to release the tension, stress, improve circulation, relieve pain and relaxes the nerves. Among the other benefits of the massage are the stress management, improved circulation, relieves pain, lymphatic drainage, postural pressure and increased body awareness.

Massage Tips

  • Get the person lie on the firm and comfortable surface such as mattress or floor mat. You should be in a position to reach her whole back area without stretching your body.
  • Place one hand over the lower back and one hand over the shoulders blade.
  • Apply thumb pressure on to warm up the back and start massage at the lower back and then knead gently to the upper area of the body.
  • Next step is to apply the massage oil with the delicate and relaxing strokes called “effleurage”.
  • Glide your hands on the back (either side of the spine).
  • Slide your palms in the opposite direction towards the area of back and move up to the shoulders and neck.
  • Knead the muscular area of the shoulders.
  • Apply delicate pressure on the areas that feel hard or achy.
  • To enhance the blood flow rotates the arms gently.
  • Remember not to apply any direct pressure on the spine.
  • Do not apply massage on the broken or injured area of the skin.
